Situation 9 You are a Locomotive Driver and you have just finished your shift. Before you go off duty you need to check your train for any faults or damages. You are in a rush, but you make time to do your checks and then double check everything. On the way home you are worried that you have missed out a key check. However you then tell yourself that you are being unduly anxious because you double checked everything. However you are still worried. What do you do?
a. You were rushing when you were leaving so this was bound to happen. You are really annoyed with yourself. You turn around and go back to check the train for a third time, even though you will now be late getting home.
b. You really don't like making a mistake. You are annoyed with yourself as you made time to double check everything properly but you still could have made a mistake. You are only human though, mistakes happen. If you have made a mistake then it will get picked up by the next driver who is booked to drive the train and who will undertake their own pre driving checks.
c. It is concerning that you could have made an error even though you made time to do your checks properly, you really don't like to make mistakes. You call your Manager when you get home and let him know of your concern. You ask your Manager to check the train for you again. He will think you have not done your job well but you would rather get it checked than not.
d. You have been busy at home and at work so you are not surprised this has happened. You are annoyed that you could have made a mistake. You call your colleague who is a good friend of yours and ask him to check the train for you. You ask him not to mention anything to your Manager as you are getting it checked again anyway.
